You are not your thoughts.
This was mind-blowing to me when I learned this a decade ago.
I thought, what do you mean I’m not my thoughts? If I’m not my thoughts then who am I?
You are the observer of your thoughts.
The observer is your higher Self.
The little self is the ego.
Your language center has the ability to tell stories in the future and the past. It doesn’t like the present moment.
When I got this concept – my mind got it – I felt so sad for myself because I told myself horrible stories that weren’t true!
I wish I learned this earlier growing up instead of in my fifties.
My name is Sherold Barr. I’ve been many things in my life.
I’ve had two successful businesses I started, a business and life coaching company and a high-tech PR firm.
I chased success and money in my life, then I was stopped in my tracks when I was in a near-fatal car wreck in Baja, Mexico six years ago.
When I look back on everything, I’m grateful that I had spiritual awakenings as a result of trauma, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Your task in life is to wake up from the trance that’s everyday life – getting up, doing the same things, thinking the same old thoughts, going to work, coming home, doing the same old thing.
That’s living from a place of trance, probably turning on the television set and getting programmed by your war or violence.
It’s important to stay in touch with politics and what’s going on, but not to be programmed by it so that your whole perception of life is perceived as violent.
If you stay stuck in a job, it’s a thought that keeps you there.
If you find yourself stuck, it’s because of a belief you’ve thought of too many times.
How to take control of your mind instead of your mind driving the car.
Your mind is the steering wheel of your life. And if you’re not driving it awake, you’re driving it asleep.
This is about being conscious.
If you identify with your thinking and believe everything your left brain tells you, then you’re asleep at the wheel.
Your brain has the ability to take you into the future or back into the past.
We spend a lot of time in both, but not in the present moment where we’re truly living our real life moment by moment, making choices, thinking thoughts, and believing things.
So I invite you to wake up from this trance and learn to become conscious of your thoughts.
And when you get into a place of overwhelm where everything feels overwhelming that can happen quite a bit right now, remember this,
We have no control over the outside world.
We live in our inner world but we only have control over what we think about the outer world.
I can give money to support the people in Turkey and Syria after they suffered such losses from the earthquake, but I can’t change the fact that it’s happened.
When you get into this place of overwhelm, I want you to stop.
Stop and breathe, drop inside your body, and feel the feelings and tensions.
Do you feel like your shoulders are up here? Just observe what’s going on and then ask yourself, what was I thinking?
Ask yourself, what did I think about that made me feel this way?
- Start listening to the voice in your head as often as you can.
- Pay particular attention to any repetitive thought patterns – be there as the witnessing presence. When you listen to that voice, listen to it impartially.
- Do not judge the voice because that would mean the same voice has come in again through the back door.
- You’ll soon realize: there is the voice, and I am listening to it, watching it.
This ‘I am realization,’ this sense of your own presence, is not a thought. It arises from beyond the mind.
This can be hard to do but with practice, you can become good at it.
I want you to know that you can get through these hard times. You have within you what you need to make it through anything.
Sometimes we need to know what to do.
I invite you to grab the steering wheel of your life, your mind, and your thoughts, and I want you to drop inside.
Notice what’s going on.
Breathe.
Name it.
Where is it, is it your gut? Is this the place you always have stress?
Begin to be familiar with yourself.
And remember, another really important thing — we’re here for self-realization.
This is the school of life.
Everybody’s doing it differently, but you can begin to be conscious of what you want and create that and get rid of the negative beliefs that are blocking you from that, it’s pretty amazing.
I want to tell you how a belief system is created.
Circumstances are going to happen in your life.
For example, I was in a car wreck.
I get to choose how I go through that now — I will write the story of the car wreck in my mind as I talk about it.
But I get to choose what the story means – I can reframe the bad with the good that came out of the accident. I got a chance to live again and bring back to lessons I learned from my near-death experience plus how I used my mind to help me heal.
I’d been through enough that I knew how I didn’t want to do things the same way I did when my younger brother was killed. I put myself in prison (in my mind) because I worked with the Investigator of Violent Crimes to keep the case open.
I wasn’t going to put myself in the prison of my mind this time.
But at this point, six years ago, I knew that it was up to me to make this mean something positive. And then I had a near-death experience after the third surgery. I had six abdominal surgeries in four months, five, and 15 days.
And I survived.
And after the third surgery, I had a near-death experience and a voice that was not mine came in, it was transmitted in the darkness to my mind.
It said, “You get to choose how you go through this experience, what will you choose?”
I immediately thought I didn’t want to be a victim.
I’ll choose the high road. I’ll use love and gratitude to heal.
You have a choice in ANY situation or experience on earth. You can choose your thoughts, feelings, and behavior in any situation. You can come from fear or you can choose love.
Ask yourself, what would fear do in this situation? What would my actions look like?
What would love or loving-kindness look like in this situation?
I’ve used this method in the worst situations of my life.
I know it works. You can find proof of how things are happening for you for the better.
Things (people, situations) are put in place before you go through tough stuff or trauma to help you get through it.
I want you to wake up. I want you to set off and wherever you are in your life, I want you to begin to understand that you really live in two worlds.
You’re living in your inner world, which is your thoughts, beliefs, and subconscious.
And then the outer world is going on around you. What happens out there, you can’t control.
The only thing you can control is your inner world.
