Your imagination is the preview to life’s coming attractions.
~ Albert Einstein
I love to dream and scheme about what I want to do, be and have in my life.
My whole aim is to have a “big” life with lots of experiences and adventures.
One of those experiences I’m having right now is that I’m taking writing classes so that I can start writing a memoir.
Now as I’ve noted before, I used to have the wickedly toxic thought, “Who do I think I am to write a book?”
This shaming Universal thought stopped me before now. You’ve probably had this thought at sometime yourself:
Who am I to do _____________?
Please know this is a Universal thought and it’s shame that will stop you. Don’t listen.
Truth is I wasn’t ready before now nor did I have time because my focus was on another goal – building my business.
I’ve spent time building my business, having our home we purchased remodeled, and traveling for work and pleasure.
Now is my time to write.
My writing teacher gave us a great prompt to start writing. You write as many “what ifs” as possible.
This becomes material for the book or essay or your goals.
Then you can organize the “what ifs” into a structure that makes sense.
If you want to make your dreams to become your new goals, pick three and then select one if they’re big.
Then make a strong intention to do it.
So this got me thinking, wouldn’t it be fun if I asked you to write down a big list of “what ifs” for your life?
Ask yourself, what are my dreams for my life?
Write as many dreams as you can starting with “what if.”
Here’s a few of mine:
What if we live in Italy for a month in 2016?
What if we travel in Bambi (our Airstream) next year to Taos and Santa Fe for a month?
What if I speak at meetups along the way to Taos and Santa Fe?
What if I hike a leg of the Pacific Crest Trail (the Three Sisters Wilderness area) in summer 2016?
What if I write my book in 2016?
What if I have a daily meditation practice?
What if my body gets stronger each year instead of weaker?
These are real goals for next year. So make your list of dreams then choose a few to become goals.
Live a big life!
P.S. “People who write down their goals, earn nine times as much over their lifetimes as people who don’t, yet 80% of Americans say they don’t have goals. Less than four percent write down their goals and fewer than one percent actually review them on an ongoing basis. Guess which one percent?” Dave Kohl, professor emeritus at Virginia Tech. Excerpt from the book, “Where Will You Be in Five Years from Today?
Now it’s your turn. I’d love to hear your “what ifs.” Now go – do what feels impossible. If you take small steps towards your dreams, you can make them happen.
If you liked this post, the best thing you can do is to share it with others.
I’m going to write my what ifs!
Theresa – it’s a fun exercise and she how excited you are about what you come up with. Make a strong intention to do them. It makes life much more fun.
